MODULE 5 ( MEMORY STRATEGIES & CONCENTRATION STRATEGIES/CHART )

MEMORY LEARNING AND IMPROVING CONCENTRATION

MODULE FASILITATOR
MD KAIL @ IKHWAN BIN MD NOR
[TIM KETUA PENGAWAI PSIKOLOGI]
(26 JULY 2017)

LEARN
“Knowledge comes with learning. Skill comes with experience. ATTITUDE never comes, developed..!”

SKILLS
The ability to do something well.

OVERVIEW
Understanding memory processes memory strategies understanding concentration strategies for improving concentration reading/study sytem.

YOU CAN GET ANYTHING YOU WANT IN LIFE IF ONLY YOU HELP OTHERS GET WHAT THEY WANT” – ZIG ZIGLAR –

LEARNING ( METHOD OF TRAINING AND RETENTION RATES )
LECTURE – 5%
READING – 10%
AUDIOVISUAL - 20%
DEMONSTRATION – 30%
DISCUSSION - 50%
PRACTICE DOING -75%
TEACH OTHERS- 90%

BRAIN ANALYZED
·        Scan Magnetic Reasoning imaging ( MRI ).
·        Can measure the brain electrical activity.
·        The function of the brain in certain part is identified.

GET TO KNOW YOUR BRAIN
·        In this life, the brain manages a lot of data for every moment.
·        The brain transmits data messages at speeds of up to 250 / km per hour, by trillions of cell networks.
·        In consciousness, the brain can produce 25 watts of electric power which is sufficient to light up a bulb.
·        Flies have 100,000 brain cells, mice of 5,000,000, monkeys of 10,000,000 and human brain have 100,000,000,000 brain cells.
·        It can be said that there is not much difference between the human brain.
·        The right brain capacity is 100 times the left brain. Some humans only use 3%, 97% stored in the right brain of the unconscious part.

Story 1
“The power of mind 1 : Setting your mind”

THERE ARE ANY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MALE AND FEMALE BRAIN

·        We need to read the displayed table and mention it to know the effectives of the brain funtion.
·        Our left brain is trying to read the colour but our right brain will still read our writting.

LEFT AND RIGHT BRAINS

MEMORY VS BRAIN
ü Memory is an individual’s ability to store, maintain and remember information and experience. (Computer Software)
ü The brain is the organ. (Computer Hardware)

ANALOGY OF COMPUTER
·        System unit
·        Output Devices
·        Mass storage device
·        Input Devices

o   Encroding / input ( computer – keyboard , camera ; human – the 5 senses, ears, mouth, nose, skin, eyes )
o   Storage ( cmputer hard disk, thumb drive ; human – 3 types of memory – SM, STM, LTM )
o   Retrieval / output ( computer – computer screen, printer human – writing, talking )

ACTIVITY
Which one your nose ? which one your ear ?
·        we need to put our hand in the difference position and at the last we need to change position.

MEMORY
·        the type of human memory system such as SM ( sensory memory ) , LTM ( long term memory ), STM ( short term memory ).
·        What are the ways to improve memory ?

SENSORY MEMORY ( SM )
·        The memory pertaining to the storage of temporary information.
·        If we are given emphasis, the information will go in Short-term Memory (STM).
·        If we are not given emphasis, the information will be lost

LONG-TERM MEMORY ( LTM )
·        The long-term memory is memory of an information over a long time.
·        Every stored information is permanent but depends on somenone to recall.

RECALL
·         Remember what has been heard, seen, or otherwise experienced, such as that of an advertisement, commercial, or demonstration.

ACTIVITY
“ CLOSE YOUR EYES”
·       We need to close our eyes and after that remember the number that shown in front and write the number that you remember.
MEMORY
·        Brain power through various stimuli, advice, nutrition, exercise, training, practice and so on.
·        Spiritual practice can also activate brain cells.
·        A healthy body guarantees an intelligent brain.

Forget and Remember
Why often forget ?
1.     Disturbance
2.     Attention
3.     Factor of time

If we want  easy to remember ?
1.     Interest
2.     Choices
3.     Repeat
4.     Exercises

MEMORY STRATEGIES
·        REHEARSEL
Repeat the thing many times such as repeat the number of phone 10 times.
·        ELABORATION STRATEGIES
Acronyms / catchwords

e.g = MAS ( Malaysian Airline System )
UiTM ( Universiti Teknologi Mara )

Acrostcs / catchphrases

e.g = carnivores
          herbivores
          omnivores
          decomposes

the catchphrase : “Can Henry Omit Dents”

·        MNEMONICS
Memory tricks – e.g : Michael Jackson Kill His Brother In University
-         The type of rainbow colours.
-         M-merah, J-jingga, U-unggu, H-hijau, B-biru, I-indigo

CAUSES OF POOR CONCENTRATION
1.     Lack of attention
2.     Lack of interest
3.     Lack of motivation
4.     Distraction from others
5.     Uncomfortable environment
6.     Physiological matters – illness, tiredness
7.     Psychological matters – personal problem, worries and so on.

STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING CONCENTRATION
1.     Use motivational and organized strategies.
2.     Create a positive learning environment.
3.     Deal with internal distractions.
4.     Use active learning strategies ( as discussed in improving memory )
5.     Match your learning style to the task.
6.     Monitor your concentration.

SQ3R :  SURVEY-QUESTION-READ-RECITE-REVIEW
READ
·        Read the paragraph for information.
RECITE
·        Summarize and refract the paragraph.
REVIEW
·        Look the notes many times and you can remember it.

VISUAL
·        Looking the lecturer face.
·        Seat at the in front and avoiding to seat at back.
·        Write the notes are given.

AUDITORY
·        The best is listening.
·        Keep the ear still focused in the class it is because an ear are very sensitive with another sounds around us.
·        The strategies to read aloud.
·        Make a study group.
·        Read the book or notes before the class start.

KINESTETIK ( MOVEMENT AND TOUCH )
·        Be active and alert person.
·        Hardly to stay for a long time in class because you are being bored.
·        Need some activities.
·        The strategies : 1. Always asking in class
                            2. thorough reading. SQ3R before class.
                            3. listening some music when studying alone.
                            4. remember that learning is an art.
                            5. find your own learning style.
